hi all, i am James from Singapore.

to cut the story short, my brother is in chicago for a holiday, and i want to ask him to bring some fish back for me :D

can anyone recommend any fish which is not really available in the south east asia region but can be found in chicago easily?

also, it must be able to be survive a luggage trip back.

do give me advise on the feasibility as well as the species to get.
my brother is staying for 2 more nights from now.

Not sure about fish from the US, but just as a heads up, i would try and find a way for him to get the fish back... since i'm guessing trying to take it on a plane is going to be no easy task with the crazy security and all at the airports now a days...

i thought we are allowed to bring 1 packet of fish back? i read it in some thread (of another forum), saying that we can bring it back as long as it is within 1.5 or 3 litres of water.

anyone from US can advise ?

I'm going to go with, "No, that's probably not going to work," on this one.

There are some pretty big restrictions on carry-on liquids, e.g. water, to the point where you can only have 100 mL bottles in a sealed one-quart clear plastic bag at a rate on one bag per person. If you wanted to try having him put the fish(es) in his luggage, then I'd say that the odds are still against you because he'd basically be trying to smuggle live animals out of the country after all. Even if he were to get them through customs and security, I doubt that they would survive the flight over without heat packs or anything since the cargo areas can get pretty cold. Also, I believe that you're allowed an unlimited quantity of liquids in your luggage but don't quote that as being 100% true since I'm not 100% sure on that.

Really your best bet is to have him call the airline that he will be using to get home and go from there on determining the legality and feasibility of this idea.

i see. thanks for the advise.

I'm under the impression that animals need to go through quarantine when shipped internationally. I have no idea what you have available to you but if you know where to look almost everything in the states can be had in Chicago.

Normally it depends on where the animal comes from if it needs to go through quarantine or not... for example, pets from Australia to Hong Kong, i.e. cats and dogs, don't need to go through long quarantine periods, but if it were Hong Kong to Australia, then there is something like a 2 or 6 month quarantine period...
