I'm looking into a used 300g acryllic tank that is being sold in my area. The tank is 1" acryllic and has a couple of small external scratches. What do you guys think would be a fair offer to put forward?

Thanks for all of the help!

i paid 600 for mine with a filter and some driftwood but no stand. mine isnt 1 in. thick though. if it comes with a stand and filter and the scratches arent too bad 800 is a fair price but hey the cheaper the better right?

1inch thick why mine is only 1/2inch thick and its 350g

What i noticed is that about $2 per gallon for used acrylic tank ( depending on the quality/conditions) seems to be fair. But, i guess it all depends on how bad you want the tank. :)

Keep in mind you can get a brand new 300 for around $1000. The 1" thickness is overkill and adds more burden than benefit because of the weight. Depending on the scratches, and if the guy is going to help you relocate it I think $600 - $700 is a fair offer for just the tank.

My 375g acrylic is 1" thick and the weight isnt a problem. 4 strong people can move it. I would be worried if it was any thinner, especially if you plan on keeping fish that will get big and thrash around.. My 180g acrylic is way thinner and bows real bad. It's in my fish room so if it breaks o well I will be upset about the fish loss not the tank or water damage.

1" acrylic is really hard to come by because its a petrolium (sp) product, and as the price of a barrel of oil goes up, so does acrylic. More and more tank makers are looking to alternative materials to help save in costs, and thats why you can find new tanks for fairly cheap.

I paid $1k and It came with filters and everything. I think it was an excellent deal considering the original price in 95' was $7k and they did a bid for the exact same tank (1" acrylic) for $13K.. If you can believe it. I was curious of what it was worth so I had them do a fake bid.. This included installation and shipment for about 500 miles.

I use glasscages.com as a pricing barometer for large tanks now. IMO, they are unmatched... unless you got the 'hook up'

The scratches should be of no concern to you, as they can easily be fixed. It should give you leverage in price negotiations though.. Depends on your area too.. in SoCal this tank isn't worth much.. in my neck of the woods people would pay thousands you don't see em that big here often..

Thanks for the replies... The guy I'm buying it from does custom installations in our area (like 5,000 gallon plus work). This one has just been sitting around in the shop. Big tanks are pretty hard to come by around here in VA. I've tried a couple of posts here looking to see if anyone is selling without any luck. I had looked at Glass Cages as well and while they're prices are great, the 1/2" acrylic makes me a little nervous. And I've seen a few negative reviews of their large tanks on this site, bowing being a common complaint. The tank will be in my apartment (on the concrete slab) so if it were to fail and cause a lot of water damage I'd be seriously in the hurt locker.

I paid 800 for my 275 new about a year and a half ago. I think that 300 with 1 inch glass I would pay up to 8 easy especially if they are scarce in the area
