Anyone who lives in australia or brisbane (or anyone at all just tell me your currency so i can convert it but id rather u were from australia because of import charges etc so i can have a more precise answer) could you please tell me how much pirhanas cost???

Errrm well and truly illegal in Australia. Having said that I know ppl w/ snakeheads and they are also listed noxious fish. So there are proll p's in peoples collections. I seriously doubt you'll have any luck, but hey, if you do lemme know coz I'm in Bris as well and would love to have a shoal again(no I've never come across them in Oz, I had a red belly shoal in Canada):naughty: .

funny thing i was talking to my woodworks teacher the other day and talking bout stuff and aquariums got in the convo and i said so sir ever keep any fish and he says yeh i used to have a shoal of about 12 pirhanas. then he said when they got too big i gave em to a friend. so maybe (back in "the days") they used to be legal. it sucks that u cant keep em.

yeah unfortunately I think they have closed any loopholes in the noxious fish list by putting a blanket ban on anything classified under the sub family serrasalminae(sp?) w/ the exception of metynnis spp and male redhooks. That means pygo's, serra's, pygopristis, pristobrycon and even catoprion and pacu's are all a big no-no. Consider for a moment that most of the s.american cichlids available in australia are more prolific breeders, aggressive and more likely to survive in our native waters over a greater range than any piranha type fish. Doesn't seem right. I you want somthing that looks "piranha-ish" grab half a dozen spotted metynnis. Look very much like young red bellies in a tank w/ some nice driftwood and java fern.

yeh but i like prihanas coz they eat live foods.:naughty: :D i aint no exert on pirhanas(i know a bit) but there is there no chance of getting pirhanas no matter what? as in a species legally that is(like any sub species or such).i rekon that them barras up north would chew up any oscar (once there a decent size. the other day i saw some at one of my many lfs) how many lfs do i have within 5km of my house??? including aquarium wholesalers etc i have 8 without any common petshops. it so funny coz if some shops outta stock i can go just a few streets away and chances are theyll have it.( by the way i hate silver dollars) the only thing thayd be good for is shoving in a tank of pirhanas grab a beer sit down and by the time ur seated all u see is a skeleton of a silver dollar (hehe).

okay well that sucks. thats it im moving to hmmmmmmmmmm lemme see well i cant move to usa (not allowed asian arowanas) not canada ( to cold) i think ill move to new caledonia( no restrictions) beautiful joint , and i can walk down to the beach eith a bucket and grab some local fish. anyway i hate australian laws i rekon keep fish have em microchipped so anyfish in the wild can be determined if it was illegally released that way you can have pirhanas and tilapias. although i already have one. but oh well.

LOL, if a fish is not native then why would you need to microchip it? Would be pretty obvious it was illegally dumped. As for barra up north chewing on cichlids, go up to Cairns and the first thing you'll notice is every waterway is FULL of tilapia. Why? Because barra fishermen regard them as the best bait and dump any they don't end up using. A few(5 or 6) years back I remember two or three creeks that had them. Now you can walk along any creek and see schools of young tilapia cruising around. When I was up in Cairns in January I also noticed ALOT of very fat and happy juvenile mangrove jack in these creeks as well, so maybe the tilapia aren't all bad news.

As for piranha, if you were only interested in them for aggressiveness and live feeding, I think you'd have been sorely disappointed. Better off getting a school of exodons. At least they are legal(grey area).

i didnt want them for that personally i like the juveniles as they are very beutiful. i (dont be offended) actually dislike the sight of adult pirhanas and pacus. see i would want some young pirhanas witha school of 7-8 pirhanas. when they get to old sell em off(if they were legal). to me i would feed them live as i love to just sit and eat a meal in fornt of my aquarium and just watch the interesting behaviour of some of the species. to me seeing how they hunt is a joy to watch.
