Makin a Poo
It's time to place another order for some supplies..... I've been using Prime for years with no issues at all... I've heard good things about safe however I've never used it... When I do my water changes its normally 50-120 gallons at a time. Just curious on what you all are using...

Also I plan on ordering from Kensfish, does anyone have a discount code? I had 1 I've used for years but I had to get a replacement phone from Apple & I lost all notes & info I had in my old phone.

Thanks

Prime and Safe are essentially one and the same, except Safe is in powder from and Prime is in liquid form with a stabilizer to keep it active while in liquid form. You can premix Safe into a liquid form but I believe the shelf life is only like a month.

I change around 300g a week, I use to use prime, this was not cost effective, I switched to safe little over 2 years ago, bought the 2.2 pound jar. I am still working on that same jar, cost was about 70 bucks, large prime treats about 2,500 gallons water. large safe treats 200,000 gallons water, at 14 to 25 bucks for a large prime or 70 bucks for a large safe the cost saving is obvious. no need to pre mix safe , get a 1/4 tea spoon mesurring spoon and sprinkle in the water, one per every 50 gallon tank size before adding the new water and fill her up. just like prime. dose for tank size. not water replacing. I see no expiration date on my bottle and in the 2 plus years I have been using it no issue with my fish,.

I was thinking of ordering the 1 kilo package of it. I figured it would last a little while.... If I didn't like it I wouldn't be out much anyway

How much safe or prime one needs to use to treat their water is entirely dependent on the amount of chlorine or chloramine found in their tap water. As an example, for my local tap water conditions (2 ppm chloramine) 1/4 teaspoon of Safe treats approx 150 gallons.

crazy you are going by the new guidelines, but either way dose not going to hurt the fish. you want to be a chemist and test ppm of what ever so be it, I prefer to follow bottle directions and get on with my water change. fish be fine either way.
It just does not need to be that hard.

eye, safe is a salt. your fish are fine up to 5 times the recommended dose. after that yes.

Nope Pops, not new guidelines, been doing it the same way with the same amount for years, long before most here had even heard of Safe. The "new" guidelines are idiotic IMO, this is from Seachem:
Use 1.25 g (1/4 tsp.) for every 1,250 L (300 gallons) as needed to reduce chlorine and chloramine

.... and you can read my response to that recommendation in the following recent discussion on a Seachem support forum;

As far as overdosing, yes, both Prime and Safe are reducing agents, so overdosing can cause a depletion in 02 levels, among other things.

I bought the 1kilo bottle as well and after about 2 years I still have about 65% the bottle.

30 bucks so its a no brainier compared to prime. Price shipped is about the same on kens so ordering from whichever is still about 30 bucks.
