I've been thinking of how to seal a plywood tank. I'm thing it is probably a bad Idea but has anybody tried using 3M Paintable Rubberized Undercoating. I've used it at work and know its pretty strong. My thought was to put fiberglass in the corners then spray a few layers of the undercoating then put a few layers of epoxy on top of that. So what do you guys think is this a really bad idea?

if your putting epoxy on top regardless i would just make sure the rubberized undercoating makes good adhesion to the resin. Otherwise regardless your sealing it with a coat of resin then why even use the rubberized undercoating if you are going to coat everything in fiberglass/resin

I just looked up one 3M paintable undercoat. Looks like it's about $60 per gallon and very low in solids. I didn't find an exact percent solids by volume but even it's as high as 60% that would make it much more expensive than many of the epoxy resins that are 100% solids.

But if you can get it for free from work or something it might work. But I would put the epoxy and fiberglass in the corners and seams first and spray the rubberized undercoating over that.

If it failed or turned out to be toxic you should be able to go over it again with something else since it's designed to be paintable. A lot of these rubberized sealants are designed to have a low surface energy so nothing will stick to them. But a paintable rubberized coating would have been designed to overcome that.
