In case you missed it, my fire eel's been living in my HOB filters.

So, I decided to make a DIY filter cover for the tank.

First, I got a screen to work with and cut it to my needs.

Then, I cut it to match the filters themselves.

After that, I covered it up and weighed them down with rocks from outside.

Then I took some bad pictures of my tank just for fun.

Hope you guys like it! Any suggestions?

My concerns would be that if the screening is metal it might rust. Also if there is any way possible for the eel to move the screen it will still get into the filter with the added possibility of cutting itself on loose strands. If it is nylon screen those won't be issues and if it is anchored securely to prevent him pushing past then job well done.

Good point. I'm trying to figure out a way to weigh down that part as well.

I'm planning on scrubbing it off whenever I do a WC, but I think that that could be a problem as well. What do you guys suggest?

If the cover of the filter sits down tight over the sceening then weigh down the cover. Extra weight on it will hold the screen tight and prevent movement.

It's not tight enough I'll consider nylon, I think my mom has some socks I can use.

See how big the openings are going into each side. I had the problem with a smaller Whisper. Use either an aquarium safe sponge(algae cleaner) or filter material in front of the cartridges. Water still flows through but nothing can get in.
