Just discovered the black coloring has been eroding off the heater. Upon closer inspection, it appears to be peeling off. Never experienced this before. I did loose a couple of fish to unknown circumstances. I finally decided to inspect the heater and saw the backside was slowly eroding which was not visible from the front of the tank. I haven't found any type of recall notice. Any info appreciated.

Is this an Aqueon Pro, with the black plastic housing instead of glass? I had one go bad on me recently. It had water in it, even though I never had the dial-end under water. All I had to do was email a copy of the sales receipt to central garden and pet's warranty dept and they mailed me out a brand-new heater. I called them first and got instructions on what/who to email.

it's the regular Aquaeon glass but with some type of black wrap
unfortunately, i didn't keep my receipt. Guess I'll have to try a different mfg.

Could you post a pic, I have 5 300 watt Aquaeon heaters and been running some for years with no issues

What you are experiencing is probably a decal peeling. Some manufacturers use them on their heaters. I have experienced this a couple of times. Don't believe it is harmful to the fish.
