that's the best pic i could get. my goldfish has this dark red patch on his back, about where his dorsal fin would be if he had one [he's some odd type of fat goldfish without a fin], and there seems to be what looks like a pile of slime on top of it. that's the best way i can describe it. lately he's been sleeping at the top of the tank though and i think his back sticks out sometimes, so i don't know if this could be caused by his scales drying out or something. but speaking of that, he seems to keep floating slowly to the top, with his butt in the lead, and i'm not too sure what's causing this either. it just sort of started happening out of nowhere, and he's still eating normally. i have him quarantined right now with stresscoat in the tank in case this is something contagious, but i see absolutely no signs of illness with my other fish. any help would be appreciated, i'm not getting far with google or searching the site. thanks.

Well stress coat won't prevent anything, it just has aloe to help heal, and dechlor for the contaminants of tap water.

Sounds like some type of burn and extra slime coat, I believe some fresh water may be the cure, change 50% of the water adding the proper amount of stress coat, make sure the temps identical, also a half tablespoon of salt per 10gal mite help a lot. Water has essential minerals not to mention its dilutes the toxicity of the water, Thus benefiting your fish!

yeah, i put the stress coat in to help heal it, since my best bet was that it was a burn/dry from sticking out of the tank. he's in a QT tank which is already 50% new/ 50% existing tank water, and with the correct amount of stress coat according to the "to help repair use 10ml/10gal" instructions. i'll go ahead and do an extra water change this week as well, though my parameters are normal. as for salt i didn't change anything aside from what went along with the water from my existing tank (and slowly acclimated him to the new tank water) because i wasn't sure what was wrong, so i didn't want to add the salt if it might actually do more harm. i'll go ahead and add some. thank you!

If the fish is having buoyancy problems i would suggest soaking some pellets with some proziquantel and garlic. The prozi will help clear out the air bubbles in the digestive tract of the goldfish that are most likely causing your fish to float up rear end first. You can also try shelled peas to get similar results. As far as the red patch on the back of your lion head goldfish (a breed of fancy goldfish that lacks a dorsal fin), it looks to me to be a bacterial infection. I would use an ear swab to clean the affected area with hydrogen peroxide then coat it with a neomycin based topical medication. I like powdered biobandage for that, you just pour it on and dab it with water and the white powder will turn to a pink gel as it binds. Works well in my experience!

i know this is older, but i just figured i'd say that he is all better now, and thank you to both of you for the advice. i QT'd him with aquarium salt and stresscoat and he healed very quickly, his floating problem went away on its own, but i'll definitely keep those suggestions in mind if it comes back! my best guess is still as before, i'm thinking that it must have been a dry patch from his back sticking out when he was having troubles staying under.

also, absolutely fish, thanks for telling me what kind he is! i always thought he looked like a lion
