just got a new tank stand!!

my problem is the sump tank that i want to use will not fit. the openings are wide and tall enough but the sump tank is a little too long and does not have room to turn :(

my only solution seems to be cut a new opening on one of the ends of the stand. the new opening will be the same height and width as the ones on the front.

will this take away any structual integrity?
here is a couple pics of the stand and the area i would be cutting away for the sump to fit.

It should be fine as long as you cut it as in the picture. As long as it is just a hole cut out, it keeps most of its strength. If you feel like it is too week, you can lightly frame the inside kind of like adoor frame but not necessary

As long as your not cutting through a vertical support, you should be fine. The ply your cutting into should still provide the lateral support that it should.

I think it would be ok as well. If you're paranoid you can add a diagonal support on the side after you cut the hole and get the sump in.

I would place the stand over the top of the sump.. I might just be blind but it looks like the whole bottom is open meaning no bottom shelf just open to the floor ? So If i am correct and the stand is open to the gound underneath..Then don't cut a hole... Just put the sump where you are going to place the tank and then slide the stand over the top of it :)

thank you all for the advice. looks like i will be jig sawing soon.
btw Tongue33 it does have a bottom on the stand.
rkc772 the stand and tank are 72"L and 30W.

Oh.. It just was an opti illusion :) Sorry ... :)

Maybe rather than cutting into the side you can stick with toungue's idea and saw through the botton.
Might look better in the end

I have had the same issue. The next stand I am building will have a cabinet door on the end to open and slide in the filter.

For your case, I wouldn't cut the bottom.

I would lift the wood that the tank sits on and lower in your filter, then just put the top back on. It's probably just nailed in place. The stand is then left the same as when you bought it.

If you cut side, you have to hang a door or it will look retarded. Which means you have to find the same doors that are on the front. That would't be easy.
