Problem with Otocinclus

I have no idea the percentage of those that are caught using that method.

Here's a video of it:

I know when I was working wholesale they were ALWAYS dying. Pretty sad.

If you're getting them cheap, you could just keep trying until you get some that live. There are some smaller plecos like LDA025 that might work for you, and if your fish don't pick them off, Amano shrimp work well.

Try a farlowella or two, they get kinda big but are really skinny and do great on algae. They don't eat the plants either. They are kinda delicate though.

Thanks for the video. I did some basic searches on how they are captured and see there is a lot of controversy surrounding these fish. Perhaps it's time to move to something more stable.

Farlowella are cool looking, but I think they get too big.

I did look into the L025 (pitbull) and they seem promising. I haven't seen any similar issues, but I just did a quick search. ANything I should know about their care?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm wide open as long as it goes with everything else in there (minus the Otos - I'll only switch if the two remaining meet the same fate - which I sort of assume they will). I've done shrimp, but never in a tank this stocked. How many to do the work and be happy?

Well there are a lot of different shrimp out there. To start off you could try some ghost shrimp, they are cheap, eat algae, and if they get eaten it's not much money and you know not to get them again. If the ghost shrimp work you could get cherry shrimp or even zebra shrimp. Personally I only have shrimp every once in awhile for so variety in my fishes diets. :)

Where are you getting your ottos from? There's a guy near Richmond VA who breeds ottos (he has a thread in Planet Catfish). I think he may be coming to the Catfish Convention in October; maybe you can get some from him. Another good vendor is the Amazon basement (http://www.theamazonbasement.com/); if you ever come to the DC area, they regularly bring fish to the PVAS meetings.

Yeah, if you could find some F1s that would be awesome. Look into it and see if you can go that route.

I've been getting them mostly from House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie and one batch from Exotic Aquatics in Towson. I have no idea where they get theirs from, but I'd be shocked if it was a local breeder considering how often they get them in and the numbers they come in.

I'd definitely be down for a catfish convention. Never been to any of those. How do I get on the mailing list or whatever so I hear about those things? And not just catfish.
