Problem with penguin sponge filter 660r

I bought a penguin sponge filter, model 660R. I'm hoping somebody uses this same filter, and could help me. The instructions are giving me problems, because it says to connect two parts, and these parts definetly do not connect, it's getting me frustrated. I looked online, but I can't find anything. Has anyone else had problems with this filter, too?
I'm sure I'm not missing any parts. In fact, I have once piece that doesn't even exist, according to the manual.

EDIT: If for some reason it's the company that is stupid (I thought penguin was a pretty good company), could I attack the sponge part to my other filter? Would that work?

I run 660rs on all my standard tanks. Reverse undergravel FTW. i don't know what your exact problem is because you didn't... well you didn't really explain it very well. I'm also saddened to see Tetra gimped the Marineland website and removed all the technical specs and drawings. It has attachments for either standard powerhead applications (diverter) as well as an L shaped fitting to pipe the filter to an undergravel up tube to reverse flow and undergravel.
