where my cichla are
As you all probably know i'm a big fan of foam filters. they are cheap and easy and VERY effective. lots of benefits, very little downside.

these are the filters i normally use: Aquarium Sponge filter; ATI Hydrosponge filters and replacements sponges.

the weights in the bottom, while not very heavy are safely encased in very well sealed plastic.

but, the other day i was out of foam filters, i needed to get a tank set up quickly and the only foam filters i could put my hands on were a brand name JEBO from a LFS that i go to often.

then because i was out and i still needed at least one more foam filter for this tank i ordered some that looked very similar but no name brand, just i'm guessing chinese writing on the box, on ebay. here are the ones i bought:Sponge Filter Discus, killi, betta, guppy, fry fish, etc(L) - eBay (item 360074097970 end time Jul-27-08 20:37:26 PDT)

when they arrived one of the filters was broken and i found metal disks in the base. i don't know what type of metal it is and i do NOT put any type of metal in my aquariums. so i checked out the other filter (i bought 2), and the base was intact, but it wasn't completely sealed.

i'm afraid to put these filters in my tanks and now i'm questioning even the JEBO because it is very similar and the base is the same, except that it seems to be sealed better.

i also found another guy that says he sells foam filters than his friend, a breeder, invented. and i asked him what the weighted base is made of and he said "lead, and it's not encased in anything". so i said "thank you" and didn't buy any of those. unfortunately i can't find his auction to show you.

just so ya all know.. be very careful of what your foam filters are made of. ;)

just a follow up.. the guy that i bought the no-name filters is fighting over returning the filters and i've had to do something i hate to do to try to get my money back.

i did find the guy i usually buy the ATI Hydro V from and bought 4 more filters.. and pulled the JEBO out of the tank i had it in. and replaced the filter that i borrowed from the big angelfish tank.

well they are no good for big aquariums, not much surface area compared to a cannister? I can think of many downsides...

i'm sorry, i don't understand what you mean. foam filters are intank filters, the surface area of the foam filters is considerable, certainly far more than the mechanical filtration foam in a fluval 405. and they are very effective biological filters.

on tanks over 100 gallons i keep one fluval 404 or 405 and 2 ATI Hydro 5 foam filters that run on a single MA-600 air pump.

on all of my tanks under 100 gallons they have just the foam filters, 1 for small tanks and 2 for tanks over 60 gallons. again, run only off of millionair pumps, because i trust them and i've never had one fail..

the purpose of this thread is to warn folks about the off brand filters that i got and the guy that is selling them on ebay.. not so much to debate the effectiveness of the foam filters, i KNOW they work. and they are easy to run when the electricity fails.

aquatic eco has some large ones and somehwere on here is a link to a lady who makes them her self... i only buy the hydro sponges though when i need them...

hydro v that is what i buy,

In terms of the cheap chinese knock offs, you get what you pay for unfortunately - I always try to go with Hydro Sponges or somthing from Jehmco.com as they sell reliable products.

JEBO used to be their own separate entity but I think they're the company that bought out Eheim a while back and have since started putting out better products, though Eheim products (most notably their heaters) have suffered respectively - it might be the other way around and Eheim bought out JEBO - either way I'd trust their products to be superior to most.

Thanks for the heads up Morledzep, definitely buyer beware.

Do you know if your getting your money back yet.
