problems with beefheart

One of the other problems with animal fats is that fish live at considerably lower temperatures and the fats will not liquify in the body so easily.Try melting fat from heart and putting it in water at aquarium temp to see.

This is very good info. I feed 95% beefheart because that is what the fish prefer. Even the ones that were used to shrimp started refusing it when given beefheart.

If I mantain that diet. How often do you think should I feed the following species:
African Cichlids (Socolofi, grey shakey, dolphin etc)
SA Cichlids (Crenicichlas, oscars, JDs, discus)
Black Arowana
Rays
SAL?
Secondly, is there any other meat product leaner than beefheart? Chicken breast?
What about hake? Is it better? Salmon?

I'm not sure what is the right amounts. I think the idea is to feed foods with lower lipid levels. I mix the foods I give my fish. I think I will give beefheart 2-3 times a week. Krill and veggie waffers every day.

I think your problem is the variety of fish you have in the tank. The aro needs meat but the socolofi does not.

They are not all in the same tank. I have thirteen tanks for around 40 species and I don't know much about them.

The message in this article is to feed in moderation, and not to feed with animal protein. There has been a long standing debate on that but even cichlid breeders swear by beefheart as long as the water is regularly changed and it is fed in moderation. To quote :

High lipid levels in fish food really only become dangerous when the fishkeeper feeds these foods in excess on a daily basis

P.S And i do agree that 99% of us overfeed our fish .We like it when our fish have big full bellies. Most of the time, that signifies obesity in fish. We should feed in moderation when the fish hits adult sizes. The only fish exempt for this rule is my rays. But even then , i only feed once a day.

I've never tried feeding my fish with beefheart. Heard they sometimes might be a source of bacterial and parasitic infestation in fish communities. Don't know if the info is correct seeing that a lot of you feed your pets with it. Add to that the fact that meat protein may be a little harder to digest and might just cause bloating if given in excess.

Quality of the beefheart must make a difference. While in some countries beefheart might be infested with parasites, in others it is perfectly safe.
I feed Argentine beefheart and chop it right before feeding. It is very good quality at is very cheap. I am sure that the situatuion on the Phillipines is different and you might be better off feeding shrimp or something.
