So as some of you know I got my 4 flier cichlids about 2 weeks ago and they are settled in very nicely. They are eating from the top avidly and are really becoming bullies to thier tank mates. Thier appetites are fine and they have even lept out of the water to bite my hand for food! These fish have a TON of personality already and I can't wait until they grow up.

Anyway the problem is one of the fish just hangs near the heater all day picking at it and what not. She's definatly not bullied as she attacks anyone who gets too close even the slightly larger suspected male in the tank. They have actually done some tail slapping and alot of flaring toward eachother. She defends the spot from anyone but all she does is just sit there. She still eats just like everyone else. Should I be worried?

PS: I know I refer to her as a "she" but I honestly have no idea about the genders yet, they are still only 1.5-2in long. I am also expecting a shipment of nics soon and I want everyhing perfect before they come.

Sounds like the fish is bored and playing if its picking at your heater. If its like floating around the top like its trying to hide, its probably getting bullied. Just keep an eye on it.

I would not be worried. What that behavior represents could be anything. I've seen similar that is just temporary.

She's not floating around the top she is just kinda hangin in the water coloumn. She is definatly not being bullied because she tends to chase any fish that gets too close. Hopefully it's nothing and I can just move on.

yeah it doesnt sound like anything major if she is still eating ok and chasing other fish, just sounds like she likes the heater and doesnt want anyone else joining in on the fun lol

Maybe she likes the slightly warmer water? This is very interesting I have never seen this behavior before.

Could be lol... Im just curious as why it's so aggressive in gaurding that one spot. It does square off with the larger flier but eventually gets beat and is forced to swim away from it's favorite spot.
