Hi,
I need help on trying to find out a reason as to why i lost 5 small healthy rays. Ill start with the tank they was in. It was 6.5x3x4 with 2 fx5s and a small eheim filter. The tank was on a hma drip system so fresh water was being adding and old being taking out. The first ray i lost was a hybrid and he lost half his skin and when i tried moving it i caused to much stress to it and unfortunately he died :( At first i thought it was another fish that may have taking the skin off but there are no plecos with the rays and nothing else that would seem to be able to do it !!
Then the next was a small motoro ray that i came home to dead and half of it was eaten due to it dead...(I think). Then the next hybrid just died even though he was swimming about the night before. Then finally my male and female p14s. I noticed that the female seemed to have been losing its skin but it didnt. The male seemed ok as he would still eat but she stopped eating alot but then today the male just died and she is still alive but looking in a bad way. I was advised to try certain treatments but here in the uk its hard to get certain things quickly for rays as they are from america etc. Someone said to try melafix which i did when the first one died but i can now say i did nothing at all !!

Sorry for long story but hopefully u can understand and try and help me find out a reason as i have two large motoro rays i am now worrying about :( Note no other fish have died just 5 rays.

ment to add the parameters....its ammo 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 10 ph 6.8, they was with bass and irwini catfish, bush fish, large tin foil barbs and bichirs and ngt datnoid. I then seperated them after the second one died and it was just the rays. I did have to feed my ngt live shrimp which i feel i may have got a bad batch and they brought in some kind of disease??

Do you have a flag tail?

You mention they're skin falling/being eaten off. They are notorious for that. Seen maybe rays struggle and die after flag tail attacks

been hearing horror stories from other forums and groups about random deaths. check your water. ive had a freak accident of 6 rays from having 1.0 ammonia comming straight out of the tap. chlorine can be a big issue to if they are flushing the system.

could be something like that but surely the hma filter should stop that from happening as it removes things from the water. The last few weeks i have had the hma off so it again makes me confused.
Can live shrimp pass on any disease to a fish?

Im used to doing large water changes about 70 percent for my cichlids but after having rays I'm scared so I do small water changes but more frequent so I don't disturb anything and don't trust whats coming out of my tap after hearing stories about others.

Can the skin coming off be ammonia burn or possible fungal? I'm not an expert on diseases but I do know since your ray died of something your other ray has a high chance of dying next.

Is there a chance something corrosive got into the water? Happen to spill something near the tank or spray some sort of aerosol? Not familiar with HMA filters but do you replace the cartridges or whatnot fast enough? Honestly if I were to put a guess out there it would be that the small rays are being harassed and picked on by a tank mate or two. Thinking one of the larger rays.

Sorry for your losses.
