i am looiking to get a sump for my new tank which will be

72" x 30" x 30"

i was wondering how do u stop the overflow if the pump failed?

is it just make sure the water level is not to high in the main thank above the out let flow to the sump?

If the pump fails, you should be more worried about the sump getting overflow. When it failed, water will be drain down to the overflow level. If your return line is submerged and there isn't any siphon break, then the water will drain to that point. Hence you want to make sure the sump is able to hold the additional water.

If you have a built in overflow, then just make sure your sump can handle whatever amount of water it takes before the water level drops below the overflow slits. If that makes any sense! :)

Leave room in the sump for such incident. Once all setup and you got everything running. Turn you pump off and watch you water level in sump rise and eventually stop, ideally under the rim of tank. Turn your pump on and mark a line for your running level and you're good to go.

^ I would leave a minimum of 1" instead of rim

Test it out many times by unplugging your return pump
