I tried to start with 2 once and with 3 at another time. I ended with one each time (they are now in two different tanks).... let's just say they didn't like each other :(

I seem to remember that they can be kept as a group. Does anybody have experience with this - how many do I have to keep together? And do they have to be similar in size? Suppose the tank is big enough (say, 300g).

Thanks...

I've only tried them singly, but I have heard several times that about 8 or so is the minimum number for a group

Its supposed to be a minimum of 6 and they will get along.Anything less its a war.

Thanks guys....that's the ballpark of what I remember....

I wonder if they can actually count??? :grinno:

only one per tank otherwise they fight. if you want to keep them as a grop then get at least 8.

should get one. they are amongst the most beautiful tropical fish money can buy and full of personality and super tame once settled into its new tank. easy to keep and clean your tank until the glass glistens.

heres a photo of my prized speciman.

But they are only 3". Just wait, and you will most likely have to split them up. I originally had 2, but split them up preemptively and then lost one of to an unrelated problem, but the remaining one was with silver dollars. He was perfectly peaceful for months, then suddenly decided he hated silver dollars. He chased them so bad I got rid of them because I thought he would kill them. He's fine with his current tankmates though (see sig).

They are great fish. Not only excellent algae eaters, but they look good doing it

Thanks guys. I already have two....they are in two different tanks. One is about 7" and other 3-4". I like them a lot and that's why I'm thinking about adding more....but 8 fish per tank is too many...I'll probably still keep one per tank :(
