Product Review: Bio-Spira

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is much better than Cycle or first step. I got my 135 to re-cycle overnight, after a bb die off. I have not used it beyond that, but my nitrite started to drop overnight. Put it in at 9:00 PM, at 7:00 AM the nitrites had dropped from 4 PPM to 2PPM.

The reason why Bio-Spira is much more effective is because it is cultured bacteria that is kept at a constant temp in a gel, where as cycle and stress zyme contains mostly dead bacteria because it isnt optimal temps for them. I am guessing since Bio-Spira, is kept cold, the metabolic rate of the bacteria is slowed down so the baceria don't starve. In the off the shelf bottles, the temperature varies significanly (almost freezing to over 100 depending on when it was shipped) and the aerobic bacteria get starved or sufficate from lack of oxygen. atleast that is how normal bacteria preservation is. keep it cold and slow down metabolism. heat it up and kill it. Come on, we all know about meats! Keep it cold til you want to eat it and then cook it so u dont get sick. Same goes for bacteria, except keep it cool so it doesn't die but not too cold.

Thanks for the info. Glad to see other members are offering product reviews as well. They make choosing products a lot easier.

I thought with stress zyme they encapsulated the bacterium and it hibernated till added to water, so temps didn't affect it that much.

Don't make me look that up again! Took me forever to find it once...:nilly:

Ive never personally used Bio-Spira (mostly cause no LFSs near me stock it) but ive yet to hear anything bad.

Ive used cycle an stresszyme both with mixed results. Then I tried this stuff called Biozyme with good results.

Its actually dried an goes along way for how much you get. Ive used it to seed filters, tanks. stuff works really good, pretty cheap to.

When I set my 150 up last yr, I used Bio-Spira. took specs before and by the morning everything was cool. Threw in some babies I had for test dummies and they all lived til I put the official residents...

Since then I've used it on all new tanks. Ran a test on 2 55g against cycle. Its much easier and faster to dump a few pouches @ once in then it is to pour in a dose ea day.

Even tried outside in a 300g pond.

Great Product ****(4 stars), no 5 because of availability.

I don't even cycle anymore. I use carbon, a bacteria product, and monitor conditions. Have not lost a fish during cycling since I started this regimen.

Ive used it on all of my tanks to start was not available for about a year , i believe the facilty caught on fire or something at least that what my lfs said when i was looking for ,,,, but its great stuff.
