On a tip from Tankbuster, I picked up a trio of these things. Quite possibly the best couple of bucks I have spent on my SW tank. The major benefit is that they are burrowers, they will dig directly into your substrate, stirring it up and eliminating detritus and gas pockets. They move FAST! If you put food in the tank, they come up from the substrate like an earthquake and cruise around to collect scraps. Another interesting feature is that they leave packets of eggs on the underside of your live rock. These hatch into free swimming larvae. The larvae never become snails, however, because they are gobbled up by your fish.

Let's review:

Snail churns substrate.

Snail eats detritus and food scraps.

Snail lays eggs, which hatch into food for your fish.

What else could you want in a marine invertebrate? They are very interesting, and I couldn't be more pleased with these substrate plows.

I fully agree! They are great I have like 25 in my tank. The only bad thing is I have heard of them climbing into a clams siphon hole causing the clam to slam shut and die.

I don't have that problem, no clams. I am keeping mostly fish, and a couple Mushroom Frags.

I think they are great, especially if you have a deep sand bed. I would recommend them to anyone. They are probably the best sand sifters.

i would completely agree if i didn't see my nass on top of a hermit (when it was fliped on his back) doing something and then it (crab) died an hour later.
are they poisonous?

Not that I know of. I have plenty of hermits.

hmm.. well then they are great.

edit: do they leave little tubes laying around the tank? like hard, used feeding tubes? i've seen a lot of those lately.

Not that I know. Mine lay eggs all over though. They are tear drop shaped packets with eggs inside. They hatch into swimming larvae, which will eventually change into a snail, but your fish eat them first.
