I have been feeding my fish live bluegill fry from my farm pond for a while now. Two weeks ago, My buddy brought his daughter over and we took her fishing down at my farm pond. She caught around 10 bluegills in around 10 minutes. Two of the bluegills were over 8", and I got an idea that they might help the 3 red belly piranahs stop biting chunks out of one another. They never seem to consider eating anything other then live feeders, so I thought it would be perfect.

I put the two 8" + bluegills in with the three RBP's 5" - 6" range. Much to my suprise, the bluegills kicked the do-do out of the RBP's. Who would have thunk it.

On a positive note though, the Bluegills have become perfect mentors for the slightly smaller RBP's. As I said before, the RBP's have NEVER taken to eating anything not live.

I was chucking some market fish chunks into the tank, and the bluegills were gobbling them up like maniacs. This triggered one of the RBP's to also snatch a chunk. Within a week, all three of my RBP's are now eating market fish chunks right along with their tankmates the bluegills.

No new chunks have been torn from the RBP's since the introduction of the bluegills, and only very minimal damage fin nipping has occured with the bluegills.:headbang2

Anyone who knows anything about keeping bluegill. They can be MEAN. I would have been afraid they might kill the piranha

My brother and I ran an experiment once. 29g hex tank...4x 4" yellow labs. (Little territory, similar fish). Added ONE Lepomis macrochirus at about 2"...and within two weeks all the cichlids were dead spare one. Mean, nasty little buggers.

You can't believe the HUGE bite marks these retarded RBP's inflict on each other. All this while fresh chunks of market fish is laying on the bottom of the tank. I believe that it is NOT unfair to say that the RBP is my least favorite fish that I am still keeping (for the time being).

I hate skittish fish and have gotten rid of many species of fish that spooked and freaked out easily. Red and Yellow tail baracuda & Huerta Rocket Gar, to name a few.

These creepy fish are so darned chewed up that I can not even give them away for free! If I could not get them off live and taking fresh fish meat, I would have had to cull them anyway! That being the case, even if the Bluegills did kill them it would still be far better for them.

It appears as you are right, and that the RBP is no match for the Bluegill, but I still guarantee that they stand a better chance of survival against the Bluegill then they have against me!

Hopefully a little melafix and the lesson in fresh fish meat eating 101 will allow for me to keep these freaks.

I am hoping that the next lesson that the Bluegills can teach the RBP's is to not be such spastic tweakers!
