I recently upgraded to a 55 gallon tank and I would really like to add a Tiger Datnoid. In the tank already I have a 7 inch silver arowana (please save the "you need to get a bigger tank" comments...I already know and I plan to), a 3 inch black ghost knife, and a 3 inch pleco. I have a pretty bare tank with only two hiding places already taken by the pleco and ghost knife....no plants. I understand that Datnoids usually like to hide, but is it entirely uncommon to find them being comfortable swimming in open water all the time?

dats do like to hide, but they are less skittish if you get them in a group, if you get a few of them, they may swim in open water

they will also outgrow your 55 but it takes them FOREVER to grow

at first it will want to hide until it gets comfortable, I guess you could get one buy you will need to get a bigger tank in 2-3 months...

I would add some driftwood and some bigger leafed plants like anubias barteri. Barteri is perfect because they can hide under the larger leafs but still be fully visible
