Pros & cons of rubber maid tubs

I wanted to know about your sumps from the people using rubber maid or equivalent tubs for a sump, as I wanted to try this out on my new set up, I was going to use a 40gl breeder but I would like something a little taller as I need the room for my FX5. If I could get the pros and cons of using this it would help alot thanks Mike

Imo I'd just look for a cheap used 65g. Almost the same footprint, taller, and you'll be able to see everything. I've seen a few with stands for ~$100 in great shape

Well I can not use a 65gl tank as my inner dimensions are 42x30x29 so I need something that will fit in the stand with my FX5

Pro's cheap

Con cant fill it up all the way or it will severly bow. But using some 1x1 lumbar for a frame around the top would stop that.

Pro Colored ones seem to be the most durable

Con the clear ones are not.

I use the heavy duty black tubs from Home Depot.

simple frame around top and middle of the tubs stops the bowing issue. pro: price = cheap and last almost forever con: none i have found

Glad I saw this thread. I am setting up a 300g pond. Although I had a fleeting thought about the bowing potential, I had not planned to do anything about it. Now I will. Any suggestions about how much framing to do on a 300g?

if your 300g pond is going in a rubbermaid stock tank you won't need framing. the bowing problem is in the totes like:

whereas stock tanks are designed to be full of water
