I am considering buying a 48" by 48" by 13" tank and was wanting to put a stingray in it. My lfs that I have trusted for many years has had a pair of beautiful motoros in for several months and says that not just one but the pair could live comfortably in the tank for life with an adult disk size of 14-18". This is inconsistant with what I have been reading on these threads. The tank would have a sump to start off with and then I would add a large canister filter in the near future. I wanted to hear what you experienced stingray folk have to say on the matter before I do something crazy.

This is the time you start not trusting your LFS

Motoro get much bigger than 16" disk more like 26" disk min more if they are just standard motoro

48" wide is perfect for rays but I would go 72x48" min
84x48" would be better

13" deep is also to shallow you stand the chance of a adult ray climbing out
Rays also like to up and down the side glass which they maybe able to to when very small but a 24" disk ray won't even get off the ground

Exactly

Agreed.

I would say a female is gonna reach 24" min and a male 18" min. Add the tail and that is a big fish

No.

But it's possible the LFS wants to sell you something - whereas nobody in this thread has a vested interest in telling you it'll work.

Yes your trusted LFS should be able to tell you which ones I'm only joking

13" tall is to shallow and 48" long is to short for any rays in my eyes

The amount of water in that size tank is close to the same as a 4x2x2 which is to small end of

It's possible they simply do not know how big fw rays get... I had co-workers get ticked off when I would tell a customer the retic ray that "everyone else" says will be fine in a 75 for life would not last more then a year in that size tank. Frag tanks are imo only good for schooling fish and some nice emergent planting scapes ( done right they do look spectacular) not for a good sized fish. If you want one of the smaller species hysterix/retic imo start w/ a 180 or 220... a single male should be comfortable in it for life w/ a few ray acceptable tank-mates. imo even the females get to big for a 6'x2' footprint. by 2yrs old my female retics nose to tail was 20".. and that's a maturing fish (teenager)

And a good idea of just how big motors can and do get... trashcan lid... I've seen a few now this size. In person they are amazing and make 500 gallons look like 10's
