I upgraded my mag 18 to a mag 24 and even though it comes with a gaurd its only to protect from big things like decent sized rocks or particulate and does not offer much protection for the smaller stuff. I DO have a "cut to size" filter floss over my drip tray and that collects a lot of the smaller stuff but I do see some stuff make it through. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I could do/use to protect the pump without dorking the flow rate?

You could try a prefilter sponge like the ones used on hob overflows.

Really can`t imagine anything that would make it through your floss that could damage your pump.
But,
Adding more floss wouldn`t hurt.

I use the plastic knitting mesh from the hobby/craft store. You can get several different sizes of holes & it comes in big sheets or small. Oh, and its dirt cheap. I also use it as screen/strainer in the first chamber of my sump & filters to catch leaves or big hunks of poo.

Is this pump being used as a sump return pump?

If so then your sump shuold provide adequate mechanical filtration prior to the bio media. Thus ensuring proper mechanical filtration prior to the pump.

Allowing physical waste to collect in the biomedia is a bad idea for a handful of reasons...

I've owned several versions of Mag Drive pumps, including the 12, 18 & 24... based on my experience, they do not hold up to sand or other gritty debris, so I definitely suggest doing something to protect them...
