Not unless your adding salt to the water, or you get a freshwater protein skimmer which are very very very new and I don't know if they work or not.

yes i am adding salt to the water. but but not nearly as salty as a saltwater tank would have. how much salt is needed for it to work?

in 25+ years i never used one you dont need it....

good article in this months TFH about this. Fresh water tanks dont work well with skimmers.

they have very limited skimming ability in fresh water. i would think there only applicable to tanks with very high organic levels in the water such as ponds with plant filters.
i too once search for info about using them on freshwater, i heard even those marketed for fresh water disappoint partially because of the price tag.

dont expect any type of saltwater results. you can always try it, buy a cheap coralife off ebay
