I have a green spotted puffer that is in brackish water right now. I've read that as adults they need to be in salt water so would I need a protein skimmer on my tank. It's only a 30 gallon

Agree..if you do convert to full salt then the skimmer would work... But if thats the ony fish and you have good filteration (Canister) then you might be able to get away without a skimmer...

And Welcome to MFK..

You should be using marine salt for your brackish solution. Tidal lagoons get their salt from the ocean. Anyway, all of the brackish water bodies that I have tested here in Florida are so close to full salt that it is hard to tell the difference. That said, a skimmer will work. My favorite is the Sea Clone but I'm not sure if they have a model small enough for a 30g. There are tons of hobs that will fit your tank.

I use a protein skimmer on my freshwater tanks, and the DIY model I built works very well.
I use a plastic bag too collect the waste because without it, as the bubbles pop waste is scattered over everything.

After a few hours, this collects in an ice cream bucket.
Been using them for over 10 years on my cichlid tanks.
They would also do well in brackish.
I also did tests in the lab comparing waste to normal tank water after drying

the difference in weight was @ 7X

Nice. Do you have a thread somewhere on its construction? I built one for freshwater but it is about five feet tall.

The detailed plans came from Aquariun Fish Mag in an article in the 'ponds' section by Stephen Meyer, sorry I can't remember the year, but it was early 90s. I'll get the details and post it tomorrow.
Mine is about 3ft tall. My only adaptation of the original is a smaller Maziii venturi, as opposed to the spa jet used in the article for ponds, a smaller pump is usable with a smaller venturi. I use Mag Dr 1200 for one and a MD 2400 for another bank of tanks.
There is also an very interesting article called "Foam Fractionation in a Discus Hatchery" by Joe Gargas in TFH from the late 80s that originally got me interested.
