I just decided to go salt on one of my tanks.

When using a protein skimmer -

I want to be able to put the tank up against the wall as closest as possible, so that my cat can't get in through the back of the canopy.

Is this possible?

All the research that I've seen indicates either a HOB protein skimmer which leaves a gap, and even with a sump I think it needs something there, not sure it's my first time.
I also know that I can't drill my aquarium because it's tampered glass.

My problem is that I have a cat who is rather curious.
He's always staring at my african fat tailed gecko, sometimes even sleeps on top of the critter cage.
Also at times I see random cat hair floating around my african cichlid tank. Lol.

Well, if you went with an in-sump skimmer, then you'd have to have a sump, which would require overflow boxes. So, either way, if you don't want to go with a drilled tank, you're going to have the overflow boxes... may as well throw the skimmer in the sump. You're right that you're going to have to have a good bit of clearance between the tank and the wall, but I think you'll need that anyway, if you're going to go with a sump.

Also, on the cats -- I've got three very curious cats and many tanks, plus a pond, and the only problem I have is my cats drinking out of the pond! There's really nothing to worry about as far as their hair, or anything. I've never had a problem in my tanks due to cat hair -- the regular dust that gets in there is probably more plentiful and more dangerous than the cat hair, I think.

you can buy a tank that has overflow's in it already so you can put the tank up against the wall and have a sump with a in sump protein skimmer and your cat can be safe and you can be happy.
