I have a question, if you get two protein skimmers, each rated for half the size of the tank, will they add up and do the job, or protein skimmers don't work like that. Eg. Would tow protein skimmers, each rated 250 gallons, work for a 500 gallon tank?

A better question is why would you want to run two protein skimmers when one can do the job? More electricity being used and more heat build up from two pumps. Anyway, I believe running two smaller ones would be equivalent to running one larger one.
Imo 2 cheap skimmers is not equal to one good one no matter what size. Theres no way around paying for a good skim. Better to have a good brand underrated skimmer over 2 overrated cheapies.
