Are they worth the money and time to clean in a freshwater aplication?
What is your personal experience????
Thank's in advance! Mic :D

Protein skimmers are for salt water use only. If you can generate enough foam in your freshwater to get a skimmer to function, you've got serious water quality issues!

The typical "off the shelf" model protein skimmer would not work properly, if at all on a fresh water aquarium. It would not foam up like it dose in saltwater.

In order to work on freshwater, the water injection would need to be very high pressure to develope enough (and fine enough) bubbles to produce a foam that would remove organics from your water. THe typical ventiru might not work under this type of application either, the water pressure might push water backwards thru the venturi air inlet.

Protien skimmers are defenitly worth the money and need little maintenance to keep them operating correctly (assuming it's a good model) but for fresh water you most likly would need to either build your own or have one custom made.

For FW use, the skimmer would require a commercial-grade high efficiency venturi injector.
On the other hand, if you get a standard skimmer included with a used system, they're great for oxygenating a FW tank.

Air bubbles good enough?

Instead of buying an expensive reactor, you can use a modest priced protien skimmer to drawn in and mix the ozone with your aquarium water.

Just ensure that the skimmer you get is marked as being "UV Safe".
