can anyone tell me if there are any benefits to running one on a freshwater tank?

Won't do anything, won't produce small enough bubbles to skim properly.

It is possible to make it work, but you have to have a dirty tank and alot of air driven thru the unit (a special air blower). Only under specific conditions are they worth it.
