hi all. i keep 5"-8" turtles in brackish water in three sep. tank. i have been pulling my hair out because i cant control the nitrates. i have high readings a day after i do a 80% water change.i checked my source water and it is 5 ppm nitrate because i use a DI filter(tap water filter by API) i am doing water changes every week. going nuts hopefull you can help.
my problem tank is 79 gals of water with two eheim 2217's running. messy turtle. nitrates at 85 ppm after one week. she does eat and poop alot. i have some plants(not many because she eats them) and some reef substrate which is round porous calcium shells (brackish at 1.010). i have called eheim(thinking i could add more to my filters to help) and he said if everything is at zero except the nitrates , then water changes are the only thing i could do. i agree, but i need some help here besides adding more water via sump/larger tank.
ive been researching protein skimmers. i see there are many diffrent kinds. i cant use one for a refug. or a hang on because i have euro bracing around the top rim of tank. i found one that sits on the floor like a canister. i dont know much anything else. HELP!
