:nilly: anyone have some suggestions for the top brand and or Performance Protein Skimmers.

I don't care if its a hang on the back skimmer or a Regular skimmer..I just want to here what brands to stay away from, and what brand i should be looking into buying. Thanks

Around $450.00. I can see if there is one at the lfs near me, how big do you want to go? How big is your tank? They have dual becket skimmers but you need to run at least a mag 18, I have a mag 12 on mine and it falls short so I will be going to a mag 18 soon.

Im running a smaller setup its going to be a 55G. but i want all my equipment to transfer over to a 90G eventually. SO what you think is a good size, or how much water u think my skimmer should turn per hour? thanks.

If the price is right, then go with Havey's pro clear. I have always and will always go overkill on my skimmers. It is not really the turn over rate you are looking for, it is the quality of bubbles and skimmate that it will produce. Obviously the larger skimmer you have, the larger the pump will need to be. Alot of the smaller skimmer use rio pumps and I am not a big fan of them. If you have the funds then go with a skimmer that will work with a 150 g. tank and a pump output of about 500 to 750 gallons an hour. IMO. I also like beckets instead of needle wheels but then again, that is just preference. Again if you have the boat load of money, look into german production skimmers, the best in the world. But now your getting closer to $1000.00 and up.

What you think work better.. HOB skimmers, or In Sump skimmers.. or what?

In sump by far. When the output of the skimmer is submerged it will create back pressure and that in turn throws off the production of the skimmer. I have mine actually sitting above my refugium and the output has a 2" elbow on it and dumps into the refugium above the water line. You can plumb them into the side of the filter "refugium or sump" but when the water level fluctuates it reduces skimmate output. HOB skimmers are too tempermental for me. Some have good success with them but I dont think they have done a sump setup to know the difference. If you have a smaller tank then I would also suggest the CPR full refugium with skimmer included. I set one up for a friend on his 75 g. and it works great.Make sure you run 24/7 lighting and grom caulurpa like crazy to cut nitrates and it will breeds copepods. I dont like cheato becaus eit tends to die off sometimes and wont tolerate 24/7 lighting.
