I have two adult Angelfish that have produced eggs on several occasions. And the eggs have hatched though I haven't been successful at raising them.

The main issue that I am having is that the pair often turns vicious towards each other, tearing pectoral fins. I now have to keep them separated, but I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to why they fight?

Hi Whiskers.

What is the size of your tank where you keep them? Are there any tankmates? If so, what are they? In a community, they were probably upset by constant activities.
Angelfish unfortunately are cichlids and will behave differently whenever they can. I have golden angels spawned in my community and ate the eggs an hour later though.:D So young of them to spawn.:)

I wish you good luck in trying to raise the fry successfully.:)

It is a 55 gallon community aquarium. There are now Buenos Aires tetras, Giant Danios, Tiger Barbs, a White-Spotted Talking Catfish, a small pleco, and a young Royal pleco.

But when I had the pair together I think that I just had the Buenos Aires tetras and the small pleco. I rotate fish from aquarium to aquarium trying to determine the best set up. I have a similar problem in another 55 gallon where in addition to the pair I have Brilliant Rasboras, Golden Barbs, and a Gold Nugget Pleco.

Oh ok. We'll need a little more info. What was their history of breeding? Do they always fight even without other fish? I can see why they may have been upset into fighting. Your Buenos Aires even in my experience are far too boisterous at a large size. They may have struggled to secure their eggs thinking the Buenos Aires can easily get the eggs. It's just a guess though but it could be possible.:)

I can't say how they behave by themselves. They were reared together in that tank and never were without tankmates.

I have noticed that they become particulary violent towards each other after the eggs were removed. I have tried rearing the offspring in a 20 gallon because the parents are living in a community aquarium. It is after some time has passed since the egg removal and when they are not preoccupied with preparing the next nest site that they become violent.

Some angel pairs are just aggressive towards each other. Try pairing them with different partners, and this may or may not fix the problem.

My last girlfriend and i were a "proven pair". We "mated" constantly. When we weren't "mating", we were fighting.

lol at e-worm
unfortunately my male half-black ghost just killed his mate
i have a grow -out of their progeny so it sucks but not too bad
basically angelfish are chiclids and fight. these were in a 20 tall by themselves bare-bottom sponge filter
i'm gonna add at least one fake plant for future partners of the as****e !!

She has a headache and he leaves the toilet seat up.
Seriously, I have had pairs squabble but never too bad.
