pseodoplatystoma sp. x leirus longibarbus info?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do. Mostly mellow (but can be at times aggressive), not too predatory - even prefers pellets to dead fishes.

Here is Chris' thread, which resulted in the datasheet: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=36401&hilit=+leiarius

Can instigate trouble (my Jau's tank mate): http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=34777&hilit=+zungaro; the aggression is always highly dependent on the tank size. Currently they are fine in a 1500 gal.

Also, I think there exists a closely related TSN x Leiarius pictus hybrid, the one 2songbirds has http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...3-wanted-to-update-my-quot-beauty-quot-hybrid

Awesome! I owned one of these before. Mine was pretty aggressive. I also had a tsn x blochii hybrid and rtc x tsn house with mine. He would definitely pic on the blochii hybrid but would steer clear of the RTC x tsn hybrid. He was fed mainly floating cichlid pellets, and shrimp. That tsn x l. pictus hybrid has me drooling!!!! lol. Darn! Another hybrid I have not owned!!!!

Hey Cliff, just thought I'd point out again: my allegations that 2songbird's fish is TSN x L. pictus, as opposed to the usual TSN x L. marmoratus or longibarbis (the subject matter), has never yet been confirmed or denied by any expert/witness/etc. So it remains a strawman proposal :)

(Off-topic: Where, if anywhere, can I see the pics of your TSN x Pimelodus blochii?)

yeah i want to see pics of the tsn x blochii also.

how big do the tsn x acharas get and how fast do they grow? so far i haven't seen any bigger than two feet.

Keeping in mind that I never chase quick(est) growth but do chase the largest possible accomodations for the big fishes, I'd say mine grew a bit slower than an achara or an RTC or a TSN, mostly because they would almost never gourge themselves. They ate as gentlemen :) not neanderthals :)

Chris Aquaculture's one is between 2.5' and 3'. It is normal to expect the size to be close to that of the biggest parent (to be safe) or in between. But, of course, we haven't a clue which TSN was used as a parent (could be 2'-er ot could be 6'-er). Achara reaches 3' in good conditions.

If you have someone who has a live one of these fish I can point you in the right direction. I have been in contact with Dr. John Lundberg about these hybrids. We haven't messaged in a while due to my chaotic circumstances. I was going to provide him with DNA samples of all my past hybrids, but these samples were lost in my latest move. :( I have worked the skeletons of all my hybrids, and sent him pics of them. He is very interested in getting DNA samples as well as studying my skeletons in person. His team has DNA sampled nearly every pimelodid catfish and have the most complete DNA catfish catalog. I can put you in touch with him and you can send him samples from the adipose fin of whatever catfish you'd like identified. He would do it for free since it would be a part of his research. This could shed some light. I was always curious if my Marble x RTC was actually pictus, or marmoratus. Very confusing when you see the large dorsal fin. Ray count and vertebrae count means nothing in these hybrids as they sometimes fuse and deform with the conflicting DNA. Let me know what you think.

here's some pics of the supposed TSN x Blochii. From studying pics in the past and from what I was told by the people who actually make the hybrids this should be a spot on ID. I was also told that fasciatum is the most common TSN species used for this.

That TSN x Blochii is probably one of the most docile hybrids I have ever owned. He wouldn't eat unless it was out of my hand. sometimes he would take Cichlid pellets, but usually shrimp. Wouldn't even touch smaller fish. My Marble x rtc was definitely a pig. All RTC in the eating and growing department. It's also of note that when I got this fish it was 14" and only grew 2" in the year I owned it before it died during a power outage.
