My guess is p. bufonius.

Bufonius is the most commonly available species in that Genus, so it probably is Bufonius. Unfortunately Planetcatfish doesn't offer any ways to really identify one species from another that I can see in that Genus except adult size.

At 9 inches which is what it looks like in the picture that would make it right inline with Bufonius if that's it's adult size. If it breaks 2 feet then you'll know you have Mangurus since all the other species in the Genus are under 9 inches.

I measured him again today and from his chin to his the tip of his tail. He is 10" 3/4.

I guess only time will tell if he grows anymore or weather or not hes already maxed out.

Agree with the above analysis and opinions.

It'd be awesome to see a mangurus in the trade but it'd be a first for me. It doesn't look like this fish gets in the trade.

The 9.6" max size cited on PCF https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=955 is in SL = standard length, i.e., excluding the caudal fin. Total length, which is measured to the base of a fork, if the tail is forked, could be guessed at ~11"-11.5".

BTW, fish ID cannot be decided democratically by a vote majority :D

Anyhow, that's probably the biggest bufonis I ever came across. Wonderful job raising it. Please, come back with updates.

Cheers for the reply's. I really can't take credit for his size since he's wild caught. I only bought him at the weekend from pier aquatics. Where he was labled up as P.mangurus. Ive got him in quarantine at the moment before i move him into the main tank. Ill definitely keep everyone updated when i can, but have a sneaky feeling. He'll more then likely disappear once in there only ever seeing him every now and then..lol

Unfortunately you're probably right about him pulling a Copperfield on you. If ity Bufonius I had one myself and he hid all the time. Though mine was smaller, only about 6 inches.

I had bought him because I love Apurensis and figured this species would be similar and honestly IMO is a more attractive member of the family then Apurensis. Unfortunately while the Apu was fairly out going and quirky this guy went into stealth mode and was only seen making quick shots from the dark at food. Though I probably should have given him more of chance before re-homing him as some Cats become more out going as they put on size. Once your guy is moved give him some time to settle in and who knows you maybe surprised.

Here's a vid of mine....... called him blur.... care to guess why? He appears from 0.06 and disappears by 0.08 And please forgive the atrocious music. lol
