Iherningi is within the family Pseudopimelodidae, so I wouldn't put it past a LFS to mistakenly call it Psuedopimolodus instead of it's proper name Microglanis. How ever with Microglanis having a 2.8 inch max size the fish your seeing at 3-4inches is almost guaranteed not to be Microglanis. My guess is it's either Pseudopimelodus bufonius or Batrochoglanis raninus since as far as I know all Microglanis species max out under 3 inches. Still a pic would help your cause as it'd be a lot easier then trying to guess with nothing but a incorrect scientific name from a LFS we know nothing about.

Thanks for thw reply I guess it would be easier to go with what I know. Also would it be ok to house an iheringi with a yellow acara and clown loach ? 40 gal tank thw acara and loach will be moved to a 150 in a few months

Or should I go with an asian bb think they stay under 6 inches

Sorry never heard of a yellow achara, a scientific name or pic might help me help you. I imagine an Iherngi would be fine with a clown loach as neither at similar sizes should have any reason to bother each other.

As for whether you should get a Asian BB instead if you mean Pseudomystus siamensis it's a very beautiful cat in my opinion and worth picking up over Iheringi. Just my opinion though, they max out at about 6 inches but can be very predatory for such a small cat so make sure not to mix them with tankmates a lot smaller then them. The other thing to consider is they are territorial with fish that are of similar appearance so I'm not sure how they'd react to a clown loach. By the way that's another possibility that the LFS might be making confusing Iheringi with Siamensis. Again just guess work as I have no idea what the fish in question looks like.

One last thing to consider is all the fish mentioned are highly secretive and it'll take a lot of work to make them make appearances in the tank with the lights on. So you have to consider if something that may never or rarely be seen again is the right fish for your son to enjoy.

I went with the asain bb the acara is an aequidens metae and the loach pretty much isn't bothered by the lights eats out in the open and in the water column

Very cool, sorry I couldn't be more help before the purchase. I hope to see some shots of the BB as I said before I think they're gorgeous cats. As for being secretive I was talking about the cats, I know clown loaches are usually fairly bold. Good luck with your new addition, I hope your son gets a lot of enjoyment out of him.

Will post pics... hes already eating and tuff little guy too chased the loach away from a shrimp pellet, and took up residence in the acaras cave...not sure how long that will last though. More than enough hid in spots fornthemnto sort it out. 3 caves driftwood and plants. No need to apologize will post pics soon

Nice purchase jaws, you won't regret it :). Mine pretty much bludgeoned half my fish the first night and let them know that even if he was the new guy he's going to hide wherever he wants and nobody is going to stop him! so just keep an eye out after lights off, although mine is oddly diurnal for the species. Also consider yourself lucky he's eating pellets, I have to give mine frozen bloodworms EVERY night because dry foods disgust him :duh:
