I'm interested in setting up a 75 gallon snow white socofoli tank , is nls good for them and also are they omnivorus or herbivorus, how many would be right for that size of tank and any other compatable tank mates? thanks
I have a group of these guys and I will warn you right off that they can be sensitive. My first batch that I got all died due to disease while my other fish were able to fight off the disease. I know a few more fish keepers that have had trouble with keeping their snow whites alive.
I have mine on NLS cichlid and they are doing good. I believe NLS will help boost their immune system. They are most herbivores and will appreciate fresh veggies every once in a while. They can be aggressive towards one another but they are mass murderers. A 75 gallon would be a great tank. I keep mine with Cyno. White top haras, and met. msobos. They do well with fish that have a similar temperament. I also have some syno. petricola in there and the mbuna ignore them.
I think that will be fine. By having a larger group it spreads out the aggression. I have 9 in my tank and they mostly bicker with one another. Will they be the only thing in the 75?
at the moment I think so ,( I want to make sure I get this right the first time as I have under stocked tanks with my ca's) , do you know a good place to order some ?
I would see if http://bluegrassaquatics.com/ has some available. They are pretty common so you might be able to see if your lfs can order some for you. It would save on shipping. If they are the only thing in the 74 you might want to boost the numbers a bit. Say 15 or so. 10 in a 75 gallon is pretty understocked. Could still work though. Just make sure they have lots of hiding places, clean water and good food.
I have a colony of Snow Whites in my 75 right now. They are remarkably peaceful actually, though I have so many juveniles and young adults that it is hard for anyone to get singled out. If you were in LA, I could give you the 10-15 that you want! lol
I feed NLS mostly, with spirulina flake occasionally. They also really love the HBH grazers/veggie wafers, and cucumber!
I like zebras/mets, but they are more aggressive, IMHO. Also, they get bigger and tend to hog space and food more. Labetropheus species have some nice OB fish, and they are supposed to be less aggressive, and less competitive. They have a unique look too, with their funny little noses.
ANyway, I really enjoy mine and they look spectacular with a black substrate and dark rocks. Good luck with your tank!
