The LFS has these in the 4-5" range for $38. They are listed as Sandpaper Catfish. PlanetCatfish lists the max size as 36" but I've read 20" is about the biggest they get. Anyone seen these larger than 20"? What is there temper like?

I have one at home. He's roughly 5 or 6 inches. They grow wicked slow. I have had him for like 4 or 5 months and he hasn't grown at all while all the other fish in the tank have grown tremendously. He's never bothered anyone as far as I can tell. He just hangs out in his pipe. Comes out when the lights go off. He bit me once... but I was trying to poke him out of the tube and it didn't work so well.... He also seems fairly hardy. I heard 36 inches too, but in a long time. Overall seems like a pretty good catfish!

Michael Bryce, aka Arapaimag's 11 year old granny was 33" last year - you can find a Youtube vid where the fish is being measured when transferred from 15,000 gal into 52,000 gal. He has more than one.

They are peaceful, unfussy. Some say they can exhibit migratory behavior in tanks too, swimming against the current for months, which may be disheartening to witness but I never seen it with any of my many doradids.
