Well, three months later we have our second spawn. So much for being shy, this started tonight, around 8pm while the lights and TV were on in the room. Their first spawn produced over 100 fish that are now 1.5 inches.

Mom is chasing away a female Paratilapia large spot while dad is guarding the eggs. Looks like their pair bond is very strong!

Here's a quick video I just posted on YouTube. Since only the moonlights are on in the tank, its not the best quality, but their actions are apparent!

Much better pics with the light on this morning. The parents are very vigilant and working together again. Our female Paratilapia large spot/bleekeri is sulking after being chased away from the spawn site. I'm curious to see if we have a repeat performance with their behavior. After the first spawn in June, tension increased between mom and our paratilapia.

Great news Laurie!! This is only 1 of 3 species in the hobby. I have not seen fully grown adults but I imagine they retain their more streamlined shape than grandidieri. I don't think this species is available in Europe. I think it is an amazing thing to help keep a fish species disappear from this earth and from our consciousness.
Good luck raising them

Nice fish. Good to see someone breeding fish on the C.A.R.E.S. list. Heard that some of the fry from the first spawn will be available at the North Jersey Aquarium Society's 60th Anniversary event next weekend. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jose! The pictures really don't show how stunning mom and dad are in full breeding dress. Yes I agree, and think their shape is more streamlined than grandidieri. If I'm remembering correctly, you have a young group? How are they?

Thanks & you're welcome Joe, you're right. I'm making a donation for the auction. They're about 1.5 inches now. I'm hoping to register the 4 species on the list that I'm keeping with C.A.R.E.S. soon and will be at the November meeting.

Laurie, thanks for the donation. Looking forward to meeting you at the November NJAS meeting. I'm sure you will enjoy the club.

Thanks again Joe. They were dropped off earlier tonight. I hope they will raise funds for the club as well awareness of the species. Malagasy cichlids are fascinating :-)
Looking forward to meeting you as well,
Laurie

I got a group of the Tarantsy too, they look like this month may decide to spawn. They are growing well but are not as "hungry" as oligacantus or grandidieri. I am raising spawns from various Paretroplus, Ptychos and Paratilapia, as well as, Etroplines. I have run out of fish tanks, breeding this year has been over the top!!

Jose, good luck, hope they spawn soon. Glad to hear you're having a great breeding year. Do any of your Tarantsy have a favorite rock yet? Tarantsy are the only ptychos I've kept. However, I can say they're definitely not as "hungry" as my other Malagasies. Except for right before and after they spawn.

Please post pics of your group and spawns, I'd love too see them.

Saludos,
Laurie
