Still trying to figure out how to get a puffer back in m fish room. Any recommendations for a puffer for a 90g? It can be a solo fish. looking for something with some personality and at least a little activity. thanks

Species tank for amazon puffers.. you could get 8-12 or so in there. Species only as they MUST eat snails as their main diet. Otherwise the teeth over grow and trimming is a horrific experience for puffer and aquarist... I know I tried. It otherwise they are very cute, Friendly and highly active.

I like SAP a know a lot about them but looking for something more substantial

Yeah that's where it gets harder... there aren't many other free swimming hunters until you get to the Fahaka. Maybe the Mekong puffer? But a bit small for a 90g....either that or a humpback puffer.. but not exactly active.

What about the hairy puffer? Sounds like they might get bigger then commonly reported. Also an interesting looking fish though maybe not that active.

As stated, for active freshwater puffers with size, you need a Fahaka / Crossriver or MBU, otherwise SAP's are likely to be your best bet for active puffers that hunt and swim constantly for your 90G...

Most others such as Palembangs / Suvatti / Hairy / Congo Puffers etc are lurker species and tend to sit in one spot 95% of the time...

then the others that are around the same size as SAPs include Abei / Dubosi / Turgidus are all semi lurkers, so may not be as active as you hope either...

I wouldn't do a hairy puffer in a 90g.. I have done it and they look lost and cannot find the live food. They are proper lurkers and will not move far from a den. You will end up with a large empty looking tank. They are much better in a 40g set up for them. They also max out at 5 inches... look fantastic but a 90g just doesn't showcase them very well.
