Ok well my puffer is wanting out of his lease in the 250 gal tank. Something about not getting along with Gar. I dont know, none of my business. Anyways, he wants to move into the 100 gal tank. So I figure, why not. But here is where you guys come in. Can a freshwater puffer stay in a planted tank or will he destroy the plants when he has a tantrum? He doenst chase feeders anymore, he eats frozen krill so thats not a problem of him chasing anything through the plants. Would this be ok or should I get him a new tank with driftwood and a nice view of the kitchen? Oh and the only time he freaks out is when you walk too fast by the tank and mostly the frantic activity is at the top of the tank. I mostly have swords in there and dwarf hair grass and things.

IMO the puffer will destroy the plants, but I would at least try with a small plant or two, weirder things have happened!

You didn't mention the species of puffer you're referring to. However, my palembagensis, assels, mbus, and travancoricus FW puffers ignore the plants in their tanks. The plants include: java fern, java moss, bolbitis, dwarf, and standard onion plants.

My Fahaka puffer has been nicknamed 'Chopper' because he chops all the fake plants up in his tank into tiny 1/2" pieces, and they go floating around the top of the tank like duckweed.

He also likes to take huge chunks out of the XL piece of plastic driftwood in his tank, hes funny.

My palembangensis also ignores plants..... Does depend on the puffer though. Some are brackish and plants do not do well in brackish conditions!

Well for the past year I have had at least a dozen professionals tell me that they have no idea what puffer he is, i dont hve a working camera right now to post his picture, but wen I do I will put it on here.

I had the same problem with mine. That is how i found this site. Check out my photo gallery for my palembangensis. He was sold to me as a red-eye which i knew he wasn't..... He varies in color and most of my pics show him pretty light cause he's been fed. Never know, maybe that's what he is!!! :)
