I created a cool 20 gallon brackish tank that's half-land, half-water. Right now There are 3 mollies and 2 fiddler crabs. I want to get one more fish and I'm trying to decide between a puffer or a mudskipper. If I get a mudskipper I will get the smallest type, the vietnamese mudskipper. If I get a puffer I will get the most likely to be peaceful, the figure-8 puffer. Are there any obvious problems with either of these choices? I like the personality of the puffer but I just created so much land space I feel like the mudskipper would really enjoy it. I know both are risky, but I work at a pet store and my girlfriend has a brackish setup as well so I have lots of options for what to do if problems arise. I'm just wondering which of the two carries the least risk. Thanks!

Here are some pictures of the tank. I'm pretty proud of it! I just need a background. I also found out today the substrate I'm using is no good. It's those large pond rocks. I need something smaller to mix in there where the bacteria would live. Any substrate recommendations? There's also a red-nosed shrimp and two ghost shrimp in there but I can rarely find them.

First I want to say that you have done an amazing job! Your tank looks amazing! And it's obvious you worked hard and put your heart into it! Nice work :)

If the tank was a 55 or better yet, a 75, it would make a fantastic Archer Fish tank!

By the way, I think your substrate is fine. It actually compliments your set up. Most of the BB is in your filter media. With all that structure, you're getting a lot of BB on those surfaces as well. I'd say if you're happy with the substrate, leave it. There's no need to change it out. FW, Brackish or Salt...that's one of the most amazing 20 gallon tanks I've seen!

Thanks! Maybe someday I will upgrade to a bigger tank and get some archers. I really like the look of bigger brackish fish like scats and monos. Thanks for the substrate info, good to know.

Very cool set up! In the big chance the puffer will nip or kill anything else living in there, stick with the skipper.
