Hi,

So today I glanced at my puffer while on the couch and I see his stomach looking like it was bloated, and I thought " Wow hes fat", but just then he puffed up. I went to go get my camera but he went back to normal a few seconds later. Later during the day I saw him puff 2 more times. He charges the back of the tank at his own reflection and seems to think its another puffer. After trying to bite a few times, he deflates. He seems to be able to deflate pretty good. Now I am thinking about getting a background, cause I know puffing up isnt that healthy for them.

What would you suggest. And say he puffs up again, after how long should I be worried if he stays puffed up? Its a Monotrete Turgidus puffer by the way.

My abei has done occasionally when he gets bored, they can do it for a number of reasons, practising, boredom, reflection etc. I cant guide you as to how long should stay inflated though as long as he doesnt take air in then shouldnt be too much of a problem. If you do think it is his reflection then do get a background as you dont want this happening all the time. Check his behaviour regularly as he may have been having a grumpy day

Yeah when I do water changes or have my hand inside moving something he charges my hand. Im afraid to get bit. But the fish gets excited when it sees me. It splashes around the top, and always begs for food when he sees me. I read this species is nocturnal and not so active, and pictures Ive seen shows them laying or hiding. Mine isnt like that at all.

How big is the tank? How heavily decorated? Does he have a cave? A background is best.

Hes about 3 inches and in a 10 gallon. I know, its small but hes going into a 29 gallon real soon. The tank is moderately decorated and he does have a cave. No background though, so I think I need to get one soon. Fish doesnt seem to be stressed/scared/shy or anything, It was scared/shy for the first few days when I got it. Now its out and active and begs for food.

I'm guessing the small tank could also be contributing to it being a bit stressed.... so if i were you, i'd try and get that new tank ASAP...
