i have just bought a green spotted puffer, he's im my semi brackish odd ball tank (i say semi as i just top the aquarium salts up when i change the water. and there is no maths behind it). he seems fine and is eating a mixed diet.

here is my question. i heard that when they are adult they need complete marine conditions. is this so?

thanks for your time guys

That is where mine is curently but as far as I know it is not requierd to have them in full marine but you shuld find out where your sg sits as they do require a higher salinity as adults.

1st of all, you must use marine salt to make BW. And you need a hydrometer or refractometer to measure it. How big is the tank? What other inhabitants are living in there?

GSPs prefer high-end BW as adults but why not get it up to marine & then add live rock/sand & a protein skimmer, to lessen the 50% weekly water changes you'd have to do otherwise.

its an odd ball community. with a rapheal cat, ghost knife, a fire eel a moray, a couple of panga, a common plec, a flash plec , the green spotted puff. harlequin rasbora x 5 a black widow and 2 tiger barbs, two blue fin tetra, ( the random fish is because i needed to turn my community tank in a quarantine tank.

its a 60 gal tank. ran with a fulval 305 external filter. the aquarium salt i use is designed for brackish water. i dont monitor it though.

he actually seems really happy right now.

ohh that might be a problem

Yes, please do! Many of the fish you have are from soft, acid water. They will not appreciate any salt at all! The GSP will get a lot bigger & meaner & will eventually pick on the other fish in his tank. they are not community fish. Also, there is no such thing as aquarium salt "designed for brackish water". BW salt is marine salt, period.

Yeah, don't believe everything printed on a box, in order for them to sell it to you. BW is made with marine salt & measured carefully. At this point, get a 30g or larger set up for your GSP & after you have it established with the puffer in there for a couple of weeks 9please be sure to cycle it 1st), you can start raising the specific gravity by .001-.002/week, with marine salt.
