Hey all. Does anybody know of any good pufer tankmates. I really would like a puffer and was wondering what would get along with it. I was thinking of puting it with small SA cichlids. thanks for suggestions and info.

The only 2 freshwater species, that I can recall, which should do well in a community set up are the Dwarf puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) and the Assel puffer (Colomesus asellus). The dwarf is too small for keeping with most cichlids (less than an inch). The Assel puffer will reach the 5" mark.
While these are peaceful species, puffers can turn on tankmates in an instance and are fully capable of inflicting major damage.
These puffers also require dental monitoring. Feed them with hard-shelled foods (crayfish, shrimp, snails, FW mussels, etc.) to keep their teeth well trimmed.

I was thinking about a figure 8 or something. I have read on **************** that figure 8puffer can live in freshwater is this true. If so that is what I will be getting.

NOT TRUE!!!

Figure 8 puffers can tolerate freshwater for a short time. These are brackish to marine puffers. In freshwater, they live short lives, don't achieve full size, fade in color, and are more susceptible to disease.

I wouldn't say Fig8 puffers are marine really, light brackish works out best in captivity, although, in the wild, they are frequently found in freshwater.

I keep puffer community tanks with C. irrubesco puffers, Colomesus Asellus SAP puffers, and have kept dwarves in a community setting as well in the past. Depends what you keep with them though, and what sort of temperament they have.

:iagree: altough I keep F8's in strongly brackish rather than light.

If the tank is big enough, Mbu's the only way to go. SA puffers are a possibility but are so prone to whitespot that QT is essential.
