The only 2 freshwater species, that I can recall, which should do well in a community set up are the Dwarf puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) and the Assel puffer (Colomesus asellus). The dwarf is too small for keeping with most cichlids (less than an inch). The Assel puffer will reach the 5" mark.
While these are peaceful species, puffers can turn on tankmates in an instance and are fully capable of inflicting major damage.
These puffers also require dental monitoring. Feed them with hard-shelled foods (crayfish, shrimp, snails, FW mussels, etc.) to keep their teeth well trimmed.
