So I'm stealing this from the Gar section, but as Puffers, like Gars, are hit or miss (seems mostly miss) when it comes to tankmates I thought it would be a good and informative thread.

Members' experience : 10+ years

Species & Size of Puffer: 7-8 T. Mbu

Size of tank: 300 gallon

Size of tankmate: Endli 14 inches, jade goby 5 inches, oscar 7-8 inches


Duration of cohabitation: 4 months


Comments (pros and cons, other comments)

Pros: Two wet pets

Cons: Major competition for food

Other Comments: Decided to go with only polys and the Mbu.

Members' experience : 10+ years

Species & Size of Puffer: T. Fahaka 18 inches

Size of tank: 150 gallon

Size of tankmate: 1 inch


Duration of cohabitation: 2 years

Pros: Cool seeing small fish school around a big fish

Cons: She gets bored and slowly picks them off

Other Comments: Started out with 30, had some breeding and offspring. After 2 years there are none left.

Species & Size of Puffer: Mbu Puffer, 25" long.
Size of tank: 300G (72"x36")
Size of tankmate: Assorted Tanganyikan cichlids, 3"-6" in length, some Synodontus catfish, about a dozen Celebes Rainbowfish.
Duration of cohabitation: 4 years and running.

Other Comments: Mbu has never shown aggression toward any of his tankmates but has bitten the back third off a Synodontus catfish and inhaled a Pearl Danio during past "excited feeding moments". Also, was pestered by a school of Tiger Barbs, which were subsequently removed.

Members' experience :25+ years as fishkeeper, less with Brackish.

Species & Size of Puffer: 2 GSP 3 inches

Size of tank: 125 with 25 gal sump

Size of tankmate: 4-6 inches


Duration of cohabitation: 2 years


Comments (pros and cons, other comments)

Pros: Nice active tank, everyone gets along.

Cons: Algae control is difficult due to SG and Puffers penchant for eating snails.
