I bought a puffer yesterday. I cannot ID the puffer yet because he is solid black, but he is either a cochinchinesis or turgidus. Yesterday I started the puff acclimating and noticed a bump on the head the size of a baby pea cut in half.

Upon touching the bump it is hard and moveable.

The bump appears the be just under the skin and not a part of any bone or cartilage structure. The bump feels similar to a sty in a human eye

It does not appear to be nematode

The bump is located between the eyes..just under the eyes and slightly on the snout.

The puff is about 3 an half inches is in otherwise good health, aside from some nipped fins, perhaps slightly under feed but has been taken care of at the pet store.

The puff has been eating blood worms for at least a month at the pet store.

Currently he is being treated with melafix for some damaged fins and stress coat. In addition, he is being treated as a precation for IPs with his food soaked in jungle fizz.

I honestly did not notice this bump at the pet store!

I do not know the water parameters at the petstore, but because this puff stays black, I can assume that he must have been under a great deal of stress..

I have posted this over in the puffer forum, but I haven't got many answers so I thought I would post here.

Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks in advance!

P.S. The speckles are not Ick, they are sand :)

black river puffer

When you say black river..do you mean Monotrete Palembangensi? Black river is a common name for Palembang..

It was sold as a Mekong Puffer, which sort of implies Turgidus...

But I will admit his behavior is Palembang like..

In addition, he/she does look a tad different than the other puffs in the tanks at the pet store..

^ well, i am almost 100% sure what you have their isn't a palembang... maybe Turgidus or something like a brown puffer???
