Puffers and corals

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what is a good starter marine puffer I wanted a porcupine but research reveled that they are a little more on the moderate side of the care level. I want to start with a Arothron immaculatus. Is this a good choice?

I think the care level is the same as a porc. How large is the tank? Tank mates? How long has it been established.

Obviously, the tobies would be the easiest to care for.

not established as of yet. I ALWAYS plan the evolution of the tank before even thinking about setting it up. This gives me a general idea of what equipment I will need and a rough maintenance schedule for the tank. I am thinking about starting with a long nosed hawkfish then getting a regal tang and adding the puffer last because it is the most aggressive. This will probably take several years to do as I am having trouble finding a place to actually put the tank. I will probably wait until I move into a new apartment as this one is too small for a large tank. However, this does not stop me from setting aside a savings jar for the tank or planning it out so that I have an idea of how much money I need to save and what general maintenance cost are going to be, how big of an apartment I will need to rent and will I need a second job to pay for all of this? I think it is smart to plan everything out. The tank will probably be set up for about six months before I acquire the puffer.

That's always the best way to plan! Start posting at my forum. I'm sure you'll get some great feedback on puffers there. :)

Pufferpunk's forum is a great resource for puffer related information, and posting there as a puffer rookie on many occasions didnt leave me feeling like I was a hassle to community members, which is something that I actually think this salt section here on MFK does a really good job of as well.

Pufferforum is friendly, and you will get bombarded with information, I have never had a post that I had to bump or wait very long on there.

sounds like a really good place to post. does it do only puffers though because if i post something like a question in the pleco forum here they just ignore me?

We have every forum necessary for complete fishkeeping.

awsome I'll check it out
