Clearly, one of the most unusual features of my puffers (fahaka & mbu) is their eyes.

They move around almost chameleon-like and have crazy oily-looking chromatic reflections in the light. Their eyes do not look anything like those of any other fish I have.

So I'm wondering what their vision is like. They seem to be extremely perceptive of things going on outside of their tank, more so than any other fish I have except maybe datnoids.

Anybody know what their vision is like? Can they see much color? Spectrum range?

Really curious.

I'm curious about this too.
I know my puffer can see me from a good 20' away. They have very good vision.

Another interesting thing about their eyes, is some species can suck their eyes into their head. Very cool to see.

I know that they have "blind spots" which you can tell when hand feeding them. Also, they seem to have quite good eyesight. My puffers can see me coming from all the way across the house, and tell if I'm holding a treat or food for them. I think they are a little farsighted though as object directly in from of them take a second for them to focus on it.

Wow! I've never seen that with the eyeballs. Seems like it'd be impossible for either of my guys with how bug-eyed they are.

I've noticed this too. The Mbu especially (maybe cause it's larger) will FREAK OUT when it sees me carrying a shrimp or something to the tank, but then seem to lose it for a second when I drop it in front of her face.

Anybody know an ichthyologist who might know more about their color vision/spectrum? One thing that I've noticed is that the Fahaka, who I've raised hand-feeding since babyhood, won't take flesh-colored food directly from my hand. He waits to see it detach from me, almost like it can't tell if it's part of my finger or not and doesn't want to bite me. I'm pretty sure the Mbu would take off my nose off if given the opportunity.

I find that fahakas seem to see better than mbu's and therefore are more cautious. My Mbu would also just blindly go after anything during feeding time.
