I'm joining Funkskunk in the quest for rebuilding a 225G and we need to eventually get a pump. Dang thing's gonna take us several months cuz we're both poor. What size pump should we use for the 225? What size sump?

If you do a wet / dry system with a sump, you will want a pump that flows 900 to 1350 (4-6 times per hour total volume) gph at what ever the feet head is.

Feet head is the distance that the pump has to pump water straight up. Gravity slows down gph in water pumps, espcially submersibles in many cases. In other words, if a water pump flows 1000 gph right out of it's outlet, it will flow less if it has to pump water up to an aquarium.

Any good water pump with have a flow chart with gph at different feet head.

Thanks! I'll start shopping when I get some dough. Maybe I could sell my black convict babies by the thousands. This tank is gonna be pimp! One of these days, oh yes, one of these days :o)

JCashion didn't mention it but we were thinking of doing 2 Sumps or Wet/drys. That way incase of a problem we have a backup system already running! What do you smart people think??? And would that change the gph of each pump?

I can get a Pondmaster Magnetic drive pump that delivers 1800 gph for 140 bucks

2400 gph: 157.00
3600 gph: 192.00 They seem to work very well and come with a 3 year guarantee

YOu can run two or more sumps on one aquarium or system but they can not be run completly independent of each other. What will happen is you will be constantly be messing around with flow rates and most likley never get them balanced. Even if you do both sumps identacle to each other, one is going to pump water a little slower (or faster) than the other and the drains from the tank will allways move water at a slightly differant rate due to plumbing, debris in pre filters, etc. YOu will allways be fighting with one sump too low or two high.

THe simple solution to this problem is drill a hole in each sump, install a bulk head in each hole and run a water balance tube between the two sumps. THis will maintain the water level very close to the same in each sump.

Ace hardware sells a pondmasre pump (1250gph) for $59.
